Interview With Dr. Geoffrey D. Young
Chief of Head/Neck Surgery & Physician Lead of Quality/Safety at Miami Cancer Institute
This month, we interviewed Geoffrey D. Young, MD, PhD, FACS, FSSO, an expert in treating head and neck cancers, including those affecting the mouth, throat, larynx, thyroid, and salivary glands. He began his career at the Mayo Clinic before being recruited to build a head and neck oncology program in Miami. Now involved with Florida International University (FIU), Dr. Young continues to advance patient care through innovative techniques like transoral robotic and laser microsurgery, ensuring comprehensive, multidisciplinary treatment for individuals facing HPV-related cancers.
Key Takeaways
- There Have Been Tremendous Advancements in Transoral Robotic Surgery Methods- Dr. Young explains, “new robotic surgeries have changed the landscape of how doctors are able to surgically treat patients with head/neck cancers and prevent the need for radiation/and or chemotherapy entirely in some instances.”
- Signs/Symptoms To Be Aware Of - “If there is a neck mass that persists for more than 30 days, then [you] should probably have it checked out. A neck mass in an adult is likely something that needs to be assessed or biopsied.” Dr. Young also says to be aware of “changes in ability to swallow, change in voice, difficulty swallowing, painful swallowing, or coughing up blood. Many patients are asymptomatic in the throat until it becomes a size that interferes with functionality.”
- Preventative Care is Key - “It is meticulous - making sure you do your general health care [screenings]. Make sure you’re seen once a year by your family physician. If you palpate something on your neck that wasn’t there before, have it looked at”.
- We Need To Better Understand Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis (RRP) - Dr. Young is a dedicated advocate for Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis (RRP), board member of the RRP Foundation, and a father to a son diagnosed with Juvenile-Onset Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis (JORRP). RRP is a rare condition in which benign tumors caused by HPV grow in the vocal cords or airway. “Regarding RRP, we have some educational gaps…we should be eliminating the need for surgery, [and] providing alternatives”, Dr. Young says.
