What does policy have to do with preventing HPV & HPV-related cancers?
ACCESS & AWARENESS!
HPV is one of the most common viral infections in the world and the leading cause of six types of cancer. While vaccines, screenings, and treatments are available, access to these services and awareness of HPV cancers remain uneven across the country. Legislation can change that!
What is the PREVENT HPV Cancers Act (H.R.3633)?
The PREVENT HPV Cancers Act stands for “Promoting Resources to Expand Vaccination, Education and New Treatments for HPV Cancers Act of 2023”.
This bill is designed to:
- Create a national public awareness campaign under the direction of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to educate Americans on HPV-associated cancers
- Expand access to HPV vaccines nationwide, allowing all young people to protect themselves from getting an HPV-related cancer later in life.
- Strengthen and widen HPV cancer screening programs so cancers can be caught early!
- Support National Cancer Institute research and treatment for HPV-related cancers, prioritizing putting an end to these cancers with the power of science!
Current Status of the PREVENT HPV CANCERS ACT (last updated: October 2025): This act is currently being updated from it’s 2023 version to include policies that include veterans and military members, ensuring that people who have served have access to life saving care. Leaders and sponsors of this bill hope to formally re-introduce the PREVENT HPV Cancers Act (possibly under a new title) in the coming months!
